Health Pack

You don't win the fight; you just need to be alive for the next one.

Health Pack

The Health Pack is a standard ground pickup and sustain item found throughout the Tribes franchise, from the original 2000 title through Tribes 2, Tribes: Vengeance, and the 2018 free-to-play Tribes 2. It is not a weapon or a carried item but a fixed-location medical resupply that restores a portion of the player's health when walked over. Its role is foundational to the genre's sustain loop: you fight, you take damage, you scavenge, you fight again.

Lore & Background

Because Health Packs are fixed to map locations, they become contested terrain. A pack sitting in the open near a chokepoint is a lure as much as a resource; a pack tucked behind cover is a tactical asset. Across the various Tribes titles, map designers have used their placement to shape player movement, create risk-reward decisions, and reward players who understand the geography of a given arena.

In Their Own Story

The dust was still settling from the mortar burst when Kael noticed the green cross glowing faintly in the dirt, half-buried in a crater's lip. Three shots had already punched through his chest plate. He could hear the enemy squad reloading, the sharp click of a bolt cycling. He dragged himself the last two meters, fingers closing around the small container, and the warmth flooded back into his limbs like a second heartbeat. He stood, exhaled, and checked his weapon. The fight wasn't over. It was just his turn to breathe.

Reader's Guide

The Health Pack solves one problem and one problem only: you are about to die, and you need to not be. It is not a weapon, not a utility, not a throw. It is a two-second sustain window that keeps you in the fight long enough to reposition, reload, or trade a final burst. In a match, its value is highest in the mid-phase of a round, when players are at 40-60% health and a single good shot will drop them. Getting to a pack before your opponent does can be the difference between a kill and a death.

Key practical notes: Health Packs are fixed to map locations and do not move. They are not carried in your inventory. You pick them up by walking over them, and the heal is near-instantaneous. There is no cooldown on picking them up, but there is a cooldown on the pack respawning (varies by title and map). In practice, this means the same pack can be contested repeatedly.

Strengths: Zero skill requirement to use. No ammo, no cooldown on your end, no aiming. Works on any weapon loadout. Weaknesses: You are vulnerable while walking to it. It is in a fixed, predictable location. In a 5v5, the enemy knows where it is too. If you are at 10% health and the pack is 30 meters away, you will likely die before you reach it.

Balance note: Across Tribes titles, the core mechanic has remained consistent — proximity pickup, partial heal, fixed location. Specific heal values and respawn timers have shifted between releases, but the design intent has not changed: keep the sustain loop simple and fast.
