Brute

Slow to move, quick to destroy. The ground trembles; the enemy scatters.

Brute

via Wikipedia: Brute Force (1914 film) · see source

The Brute is a playable character class in the Tribes series, specifically introduced in Starsiege: Tribes. Heavily armored and armed with powerful weapons, the Brute is a slow-moving but devastating force on the battlefield, designed for direct assault and area denial. Unlike the agile Light or versatile Medium armor classes, the Brute sacrifices speed and mobility for sheer firepower and durability, making it a key anchor in team-based combat.

Lore & Background

The Brute armor was forged by the Imperial Blood Eagle tribe to answer a brutal question: how do you hold ground when the enemy won't stop coming? Its designers rejected finesse entirely, layering thick ceramic plates over a fusion-powered exoskeleton that groans under the weight of the heaviest weapons in the tribal arsenal. The pilots are no less extreme—veterans and berserkers who have traded flesh for steel, their bodies scarred and augmented to endure the crushing strain of the armor. To wear a Brute is to accept that you are the wall, and the wall does not retreat.

In Their Own Story

The ground shook as the Brute landed, its impact cratering the dusty surface of the ruined outpost. Inside the cockpit, Kael felt the familiar thrum of the fusion pack as he cycled the chaingun. He was the anvil; the Lights were the hammer. They'd flush the enemy from the tunnels, and he'd be waiting. A plasma bolt glanced off his shoulder plate, barely registering. He grinned, thumbing the trigger. The chaingun roared, and the hallway became a storm of metal. The enemy's screams were lost in the din, swallowed by the relentless chatter of spinning barrels. When the smoke cleared, Kael stepped forward, his boots crunching on debris and spent casings. The anvil had held.

Reader's Guide

The Brute is the slowest and most durable class in the game, with the highest health and armor pools. Its primary role is to hold key positions, suppress enemy movement, and destroy deployables like turrets and sensors. Its movement is limited to jetpack-assisted hops rather than sustained flight, making it vulnerable to hit-and-run tactics. However, its weapon loadout—typically including a chaingun, plasma gun, or mortar—allows it to dominate chokepoints and clear flag stands. Effective Brute play relies on positioning and prediction. You must anticipate enemy routes and set up ambushes or defensive lines. Team support is critical: a Brute without repair or covering fire is a slow target. Mastering the timing of your jetpack and knowing when to switch to a lighter weapon for self-defense are essential skills.
