Ammo Pack
Stay in the fight when the magazine runs dry.
The Ammo Pack is a field equipment item in the Tribes first-person shooter franchise, serving as a consumable resource that restores a player's weapon ammunition during a match. In a series defined by fast, close-quarters combat where players sprint between team bases, running dry on rounds mid-fight is a frequent and often fatal problem; the Ammo Pack exists to keep players in the fight without forcing them to retreat to a weapon spawn.

Lore & Background
In the world of the Tribes, soldiers of the various tribal factions fight over territory in a relentless, sprint-and-shoot war. Ammunition is finite, and the pace of combat means a single prolonged firefight can drain a full reserve. The Ammo Pack was introduced as a lightweight, single-use resupply canister that a soldier can deploy in the field, refilling the magazine and reserve of their active weapon in a matter of seconds. It is not a weapon itself but a lifeline between engagements.
In Their Own Story
The dust was still settling from the last rocket when Kael felt the familiar click of an empty chamber. Across the ridge, the enemy's SMG was still chattering, rounds snapping off his shoulder plate. He didn't break stride. One hand dropped to his belt, fingers closing around the small canister, and he thumb-activated the release. A soft hiss, the clunk of fresh rounds seating in the magazine, and the rifle was alive again. He crested the ridge, sprinted, and put three rounds into the gap before the other guy could even turn his head. The canister clinked empty on the ground behind him. No one would pick it up. There was no time.
Reader's Guide
The Ammo Pack solves one specific problem: you are mid-fight, your reserve is at two or three rounds, and the nearest weapon spawn is a full sprint away. It buys you the next engagement without a costly retreat.
In practice, its value scales with how aggressive your playstyle is. If you are a player who pushes through the map constantly, engages in multiple short skirmishes, and rarely sits back to reload at a spawn, the Ammo Pack is essentially mandatory. If you play a more conservative route—hitting spawns, picking up fresh weapons, and keeping your reserve topped—the item becomes lower priority.
Strengths: immediate, no cooldown, works on your current weapon without swapping. Weaknesses: it only refills what you are holding, so if you swap weapons you lose the benefit; in titles where it is a limited pickup, it can be contested by teammates; and it does nothing for health, so a player who is both low and empty still needs a separate heal source.
Balance-wise, across the Tribes entries the item has generally stayed consistent in function. Adjustments have tended to be about quantity available on a map or whether it is shared or individual, rather than a fundamental stat change. If you find yourself dying in the second or third exchange of a fight rather than the first, the Ammo Pack is the cheapest fix in your loadout.
Did You Know?
- In Tribes, the core loop is sprint, engage, disengage, repeat—so an item that simply refills your gun fits the design philosophy of keeping players moving rather than camping.
- The franchise moved from Volition, Inc. (Tribes and Tribes 2) to Hi-Rez Studios for later entries, and equipment systems were reworked between those developer transitions.
- Tribes is known for its 'no-pause, no-cover' design where players are always sprinting, making mid-fight ammo management a constant tactical consideration rather than a rare event.
- The item's purpose is purely logistical—no damage, no status effect—making it one of the few pieces of equipment in the series that is entirely about sustainment.
