Gorge
A narrow canyon where every ridge is a killbox and the floor is a death sentence.
Gorge is a multiplayer map in Tribes 2, the 2005 team-based first-person shooter developed by Volition, Inc. Set within a deep canyon environment, the map channels combat along a narrow central corridor flanked by steep rocky walls, creating a space where positioning and vertical awareness matter as much as raw aim.
As with all Tribes 2 maps, Gorge is designed around objective-based team modes and features the franchise's signature stylized, high-contrast art direction. The canyon layout rewards players who control elevated sightlines while punishing those who commit to the open floor without cover.

Lore & Background
In the Tribes universe, combat takes place across a variety of alien and terrestrial biomes, each shaped by the planet's geology. Gorge represents a region where tectonic activity has split the landscape into a long, deep fissure, with layered rock strata visible along the walls. The canyon floor is relatively flat and exposed, while the upper ledges and overhangs create a natural amphitheater of firing positions.
The map's design philosophy mirrors the broader Tribes ethos: fast, chaotic, and unforgiving. There are no long, safe traversal routes. Every path through the gorge is a potential ambush lane, and the limited cover forces constant movement and repositioning. The rocky terrain offers partial concealment but rarely full protection, meaning players must rely on timing and map awareness rather than hiding behind walls.
Within the community, Gorge became a staple of competitive and casual play alike, valued for its readability and the way it compresses engagements into a few key sightlines. Its relative simplicity compared to more sprawling maps made it a common pick for new players learning the game's movement and weapon systems.
In Their Own Story
The dust hadn't settled from the last round when Kael crouched behind a fractured boulder, listening. Somewhere up on the eastern ridge, boots scuffed stone. The gorge swallowed sound the way it swallowed light—slowly, then all at once. He could see the shadow of a figure pausing at the lip, scanning the floor. Three seconds. Maybe four. Kael checked his ammo, felt the familiar weight of the rifle, and waited. The canyon was patient. It had been patient for millennia, carving itself grain by grain through the rock. It would be patient a little longer, letting the man on the ridge think he was safe. Then the bullet would come, and the gorge would collect another name for its walls.
Reader's Guide
Gorge is fundamentally a corridor map with verticality. The central floor runs the length of the canyon and is the most dangerous lane: flat, open, and visible from multiple angles simultaneously. Contesting the floor is a losing proposition unless you're flanking from a side passage.
The real action lives on the upper ledges. Both the eastern and western walls feature a series of staggered platforms and overhangs that give players sightlines down the entire length of the gorge. Controlling these elevated positions lets you pick off anyone crossing the floor with minimal risk. The trade-off is that ledge-to-ledge movement is slow and exposes you briefly to crossfire from the opposite wall.
The two ends of the gorge serve as natural spawn and regroup zones. The terrain narrows slightly at each end, creating a brief chokepoint before the canyon opens into the wide central stretch. This means the first few seconds after a spawn are your most vulnerable window—use the narrowing walls as cover while you orient.
Community shorthand: players often call the central open stretch "the killbox" and the upper platforms "the perches." A common meme among veterans is that Gorge is "a three-lane highway with no exits," emphasizing how every route funnels into the same visible corridor.
Weapon-wise, the map favors mid-range rifles and shotguns for the mid-floor fights, while the perches reward precision with sniper-type weapons. Grenades and area-of-effect tools are highly effective on the ledges, where enemies are clustered and have limited escape routes.
Did You Know?
- Tribes 2, the game Gorge appears in, was developed by Volition, Inc., the same studio behind Saints Row and Red Faction.
- The Tribes franchise debuted in 2000, and its maps have always emphasized fast, open team combat over stealth or single-player progression.
- Tribes 2's art direction uses a deliberately stylized, high-saturation palette that makes the rocky canyon terrain of Gorge read clearly even during fast movement.
- The franchise's team-based design means Gorge's narrow geometry creates frequent multi-player engagements rather than isolated duels.
